I’m sure we all struggle with writing in one way or another. Thankfully, we can all be writing pros (or at least appear to be) thanks to a free app called Grammarly.
I was an English major in college and the managing news editor at our college paper, which means that I was a fairly good writer when I graduated. Over time, however, I’ve found that all of the writing rules I used to be able to recite at the drop of a hat have flown by the wayside. I’m obviously a big fan of over-using idioms. Sometimes I find myself wondering something as basic as whether or not a sentence needs another comma. I rarely use semi-colons because their usage has long escaped me. The em dash has become my favorite writing tool because it’s so darn versatile, even though I know there are better options out there.
This is all to say that as I’ve gotten older, my writing has needed a substantial amount of help.
A while back I decided to give Grammarly a whirl to see if it would help with any of the grammatical issues I’d been experiencing and let me quickly sum up the remainder of this post for you: EVERYONE needs Grammarly. Period.
Grammarly is a FREE browser extension that will “proofread” any writing you do online, for example, on your website, Facebook post, or Google Doc. It will let you know when there are errors, and even make suggestions for how you might fix said errors. 9 times out of 10 they are correct in pointing out my error, with the only “fails” I’ve experienced being a word that’s not in their dictionary, such as a product name.
The free version of Grammarly checks for 150 common grammatical mistakes, including spelling. It checks for things like subject-verb agreement and even makes sure you’re using the correct version of a word that has multiple spellings. It will even suggest synonyms for common words that will help take your writing to the next level.
Using Grammarly couldn’t be easier. Let’s say you write an awesome sentence like the one below:
You’ll notice that Grammarly underlined three potential mistakes and a red circle appears letting you know that there are currently three mistakes in the document.
If you click on the red circle, a pop-up appears that further outlines the mistakes:
Yep, Grammarly correctly diagnosed my errors! You can easily correct what’s wrong by clicking on each individual red line.
Another box will pop up and you can use Grammarly’s suggestions to correct your mistake. Or, if you think the tool is giving you bad advice, you can always hit the “ignore” button.
Grammarly: Free vs. Premium
There is a premium version of Grammarly available for $139.95 per year though honestly, I’ve gotten along just fine with the free version! Here’s a comparison of the two:
If I were a student, the premium version of Grammarly would be a no-brainer. But I’m guessing most of us can get by with the free version.
Grammarly is a Must-Have Tool
In my opinion, Grammarly is a must-have tool for everyone. Regardless of your writing skills right now, this tool will make you better. There are very few must-have tools that are available at the best price point of all – free – so grab this one before they realize they can charge more!
